GYPSY SWING
Genere musicale proprio (all'origine) ai gitani, più o meno ispirato allo stile jazz degli anni
'30 '40, del quale Django Reinhardt e il suo Quintet rappresentano il riferimento assoluto, il
gypsy swing affonda le sue radici nelle diverse tradizioni musicali zigane ed europee,
classiche e popolari, contrariamente al jazz classico, più legato alle tradizioni afro-americane.

Eseguito con strumenti a corda, il gypsy swing è caratterizzato essenzialmente dal
bilanciamento ritmico specifico delle chitarre d'accompagnamento, la "pompe" gypsy sulla
quale i solisti espongono delle melodie e improvvisano con una foga tutta gitana.

In the world of Gypsy Jazz, the original Quintette of the Hot Club of France achieved an energy output seldom equaled or surpassed for 7 decades or so. Django wanted to have two rhythm guitars behind him when he soloed to give him a full sound. Then when Grappelli soloed, Django would interject himself between Grappelli and the rhythm guitar section. From this vantage point, he would "push" Grappelli with a series of well placed shots, shuffles, and turnarounds that would have the effect of driving the group to a greater energy output as the song approached its conclusion. In this DVD, the classic 4-to-the-bar rhythm is broken down into four separate unsable styles. After that, Django’s syncopated rhythm shots are analyzed and presented by example from a simple backbeat to 2-bar long syncopated strums. My own philosophy is that the rhythm guitar section is the most important component of the Gypsy Jazz group. The rhythm guitar should be in a position to drive and not follow the group. The information contained in this DVD will give you the rhythmic tools to infuse the sound with the energy that this genre of music deserves. Remember that rhythm guitar is NOT "second fiddle".

Enregistrée en avril 1935
Sur ce 32 AABA, le thème mélodique est exposé par le violon, la guitare de Django intervenant
sous forme de contre-chant. Le maître produit ensuite un solo dynamique et virtuose
(cf. mesure 43) qui comprend nombre de torsions de cordes, manouches et bluesy, ainsi que
des octaves puissamment marquées. Notez aussi que l'introduction est utilisée comme coda
de fin, à l'issue d'un exposé final qui reprend la section A seulement.

IMPROVISATION 2
Enregistrée le 10 septembre 1938

A l'écoute, la première version d'Improvisation 2 ayant manifestement servi à Django de« mise en
doigts », nous avons choisi de transcrire la version B, identique, à cette différence que les thèmes y
sont développés, les idées abouties. Cette« pièce » se compose d'arpèges et de modulations qui
ne sont pas sans rappeler certaines oeuvres de Claude Debussy. On y trouve aussi, dans le pont et la
coda, d'étranges phrasés« shuffle ». A la toute fin, observez le désaccordage en ré grave de la sixième
corde ... désaccord age d'autant plus surprenant qu'on n'entend absolument pas Django l'opérer,
même en tendant l'oreille au maximum - un pur mystère !

IMPROVISATION 3
Enregistrées le 26 février 1943

Là, quoique l'une et l'autre reposent sur les mêmes ingrédients - tonalité mineure,
arpèges -, ces deux versions sont dignes d'intérêt. La première, au tempo assez rapide,
présente une structure AABACA, une coda qui reprend l'intro et une fort belle modulation
terminale. La seconde version, plus assise question tempo, est dépourvue
d'intro et de section C ; et l'on trouve dans la section B des passages mélodiques
virtuoses. L'accord final y est majeur.

IMPROVISATION 4
Enregistrée en février 1949
Courte et sur tempo lent, faisant peu appel à la technique et beaucoup aux cordes à vide, cette improvisation est plus facile à étudier. Elle est faite d'une abondante suite d'accords roulés, entrecoupés de quelques arpèges, tout ceci en forme métrique de type AABA.

IMPROVISATION 5
Enregistrée le 21novembre 1947
A l'inverse de la précédente, l'Improvisation 5 est ardue sur le plan technique. C'est une suite d'arpèges et d'accords, rehaussés de traits mélodiques virtuoses dont la couleur rappelle volontiers la musique flamenca (cf. partie terminale). Par ailleurs, il convient d'observer que cette improvisation a sans doute servi d'inspiration au pianiste John Lewis pour composer son thème Django .

Improvisation 6
Enregistrée le 1er décembre 1945
Difficile également sur le plan technique, reposant sur les mêmes ingrédients que la précédente - arpèges, accords roulés, traits mélodiques - l'Improvisation 6 n'offre cependant pas, à notre sens, de développements aussi maîtrisés. En cela, c'est une véritable improvisation au sens propre du terme. Elle contient cependant de remarquables passages en cadences d'accords et fait usage, elle aussi, de colorations mélodiques hispanisantes.

VALSE MANOUCHE
Enregistrée par la BBCen 1935
Enfin, voici une valse jouée en duo piano/guitare, dont le guitariste est très probablement Django, alors aux tout premiers moments de sa carrière. De forme métrique 112 AABA, cette valse séduisante présente une étrange cadence sur les sections A (mesures 13-16),dans lesquelles Django produit une montée chromatique très reconnaissable de son style. Est également reconnaissable le choix de certaines harmonies du pont, très hardies pour l'époque, à caractère hispanisant, des accords parfaits majeurs placés sur une note de pédale.

DJANGO REINHARDT

Jé sur le carrelage de la cuisine d'un café à Liberchies en Belgique le 23 janvier 1910, Django Reinhardt,

après avoir révolutionné le folklore "manouche", s'est éteint le 16 mai 1953 à l'hôpital de Fontainebleau
des suites d'une congestion cérébrale.
Dès l'âge de 12 ans, c'est en virtuose du banjo que Django se produit dans les bals parisiens en compagnie
des grands accordéonistes, Guerino, Jean Vaissade ou Maurice Alexander.
L'incendie de sa roulotte en 1928 va l'obliger à une longue et douloureuse rééducation. Handicapé de la
main gauche avec deux doigts inutilisables, Django Reinhardt atteindra à la guitare une technique
époustouflante, une virtuosité encore plus étonnante qu'au banjo. Notons au passage que Django était
également un excellent violoniste et un peintre remarquable.
La musique de Django Reinhardt, quintessence des musiques marginales nées des rues de Varsovie
(tzigane), Paris (musette), Harlem (jazz), est inspirée, parfaitement originale, identifiable dès la première écoute.
Dominant les cordes, Django Reinhardt virtuose inimitable a composé plus de deux cents mélodies dont
la plupart sont devenues des standards (plus de mille enregistrements). Django Reinhardt était un
improvisateur intarissable.
Ne sachant ni lire, ni écrire, il dictait sur sa guitare ses compositions et ses arrangements à ses partenaires.
Il est "Le" Guitariste source d'inspiration pour tous les guitaristes, tous les musiciens d'aujourd'hui.
Plus que chef d'école Django est "Le Jazz Manouche" et aussi le Fondateur de Jazz Européen.

En réalisant ce recueil de cinq pièces swing de Django Reinhardt, notre souhait était de rendre accessible
aux guitaristes de tous bords, cinq oeuvres typiques du maître de la guitare manouche.
Il nous semblait indispensable de joindre les enregistrements existants, car l'interprétation, le jeu,
l'improvisation, sont des éléments transmis oralement, difficilement traduisibles sur papier. Les quatre
premiers enregistrements «Montagne Sainte Geneviève», «Gagoug), «Chez Jacquet - A la Petite
Chaumière) et «Chotü) qui ont servi de bases aux transcriptions - sont ceux de Matelo Ferret, qui a cotoyé
Django dans de nombreux concerts. Django ne les a apparemment jamais enregistré lui-même.
La cinquième pièce, «Djalamichtûl> ne figurait sur aucun enregistrement. Grâce à Frank Hagège, père des
.Django D'Or) il nous a été permis de réenregistrer cette pièce méconnue avec le guitariste
Patrick Saussois, qui par bonheur l'avait joué quelques années auparavant aux côtés de Matelo.
Jean Yves Cases (Guitariste) et Pierre Adenot (Arrangeur) ont mis en lumière le détail note après note de
ces cinq pièces.

Le style:
Quatre de ces cinq pièces de Django Reinhardt sont des valses (mesure à trois temps), mais trois d'entre
elles ne comportent pas d'indication de mesure, car leur interprétation est libre. Il est indispensable
d'écouter les enregistrements pour comprendre quel doit être le rythme donné à ces phrases "improvisée ..
dont une transcription vous est donnée ici. Notez aussi que pour «Gagoug» et (,Chotü>, les altération n
sont que dans un seul groupe de notes.
Le jeu:
- Soigner les trémolos - très nombreux - et très utilisés dans les interprétations de Matelo Ferret.
- Travailler les arpèges, qui font le charme des chorus typiques de Django Reinhardt.
- Ces titres se jouent rapidement, mais il est indispensable de travailler dans un premier temps le
différentes parties de façon isolée, et de les exécuter lentement afin d'avoir les "notes dans les doigts".
- Ne vous fiez pas à la simplicité apparente de ces titres. Les doigtés et la rapidité d'exécution en font des
morceaux relativement difficiles.

Born on the kitchen fioor of a café in Liberchies, Belgium, on 23rd January 1910, Django Reinhardt, the
man who introduced revolutionary changes ta traditional "gipsy" music, died of a stroke in
Fontainebleau's hospital on 16th May 1953.
From the age of 12 he was a banjo virtuoso, playing in Parisian dance halls alongside great accordionists
such as Guerino, Jean Vaissade and Maurice Alexander.
After suffering serious injuries when his caravan caught fire in 1928, he experienced a long and painful
recovery during which he developed a new fingering technique. Despite injuries to his left hand which left
him with two disabled fingers, Django Reinhardt achieved an astaunding guitar technique, becoming even
more virtuosic than he had been on the banjo. Django was also an excellent violinist and an accomplished
paimer.
Django Reinhardt's music, epitomizing the fringe music heard on the streets of Warsaw (tzigane), Pari
(musette) and Harlem (jazz), is full of soul, totally original and recognizable on the very first hearing.
A master of the guitar and peerless virtuoso, Django Reinhardt composed more than two hundred
melodies, many of which became standards and have been recorded over a thousand times. As an
improviser he was incomparable.
He could neither read nor write, so he would dictate rus compositions and arrangements ta his sidemen
from his guitar. He is "the" guitarist, a source of in piration ta ail guitarists and musicians taday.
More than father of a genre, Django is "Gypsy Jazz" and the founder of European Jazz.
